The aircraft of the 517th Airlift Squadron, stationed at Elmendorf, Alaska, are operated in conjunction with the 144th Squadron of the State National Guard. One of the eight C-17s is named ?Spirit of the Sourdoughs? as a tribute to Alaska?s early history and heritage. In Alaska, ?Sourdough? has long been a nickname for the hardy inhabitants, dating back to the days of the gold rush in the far north. This Globemaster transport aircraft was named in honour of the achievements of these early Alaskan pioneers.
