In 2001, Sukhoi's civil aircraft department began developing a new regional jet to replace the ageing Soviet-built Tupolev TU-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42. On 19 May 2008, the prototype with the factory designation 97001 took off for its maiden flight. Our first metal model of the superjet in 1:200 scale appears in the Sukhoi factory colours with the striking blue colour gradients on the fuselage. The programme was plagued by technical problems at the start of series production; deliveries to mostly Russian airline customers were delayed. Difficulties with the first exports to Mexico and Western Europe, partly due to a lack of a maintenance network, and the sanctions imposed as a result of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine did their bit to throw further sand in the gears. So far, just over 200 units have been delivered.
