The last of 16 Ilyushin IL-18s, DM-STO was put into service in April 1968 by Interflug, the state airline of the GDR. In almost 30 years of service, the four-engined turboprop from Soviet production was the main aircraft type and was used domestically but also on long-haul routes as far as Havana and Beijing. The first aircraft, which were delivered from 1960 onwards, still flew in a blue livery and with the well-known crane as Deutsche Lufthansa. Due to legal disputes with Lufthansa in West Germany, which was re-established at the same time, the GDR founded Interflug as a second airline. DM-STO appears in the red colour scheme and logo of Interflug introduced in 1963. In 1991 it continued to be operated by the short-lived BerLine, founded by former Interflug employees. After a short period of use by the Bulgarian Air Zory, this IL-18 was still used in Cuba from 1995 until the 2000s by Aero Caribbean, mainly on routes to neighbouring countries in the Caribbean.
