Olympic Airways introduced the four-engine Douglas DC-6 in 1958 and deployed it on longer European routes such as Athens?London via Rome and Paris. The aircraft remained part of the airline?s fleet until the early 1970s and was withdrawn from service in 1972, after some fourteen years, when it was replaced by Boeing 720 jets. It was also used on Greek domestic routes, where the pressurised DC-6s remained in service even after the introduction of newer aircraft. SX-DAM was originally delivered to Swissair in 1953 and renamed ?Isle of Lesvos? when it was sold to Olympic in 1962. After being withdrawn from service in 1972, it was used as a fire-fighting aircraft in the western United States until it was scrapped in 1997.
