The very first Boeing 737 rolled off the production line on 17 December 1966. Sixty years on, there is no better time to look back at the beginnings of the most successful family of commercial aircraft to date. What began as a short-haul aircraft with a capacity for 100 passengers has grown into an entire family of aircraft, with over 12,500 units produced to date ? and a further 3,600 on order in Boeing?s order books. The small series began with the N515NA: it started out as the prototype for the 737-100 series and was later operated by NASA for three decades before being withdrawn from service in 2003 as the very last aircraft of the 100 series. Today, it is on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.
