Of the total of 1,480 F/A-18 Hornets built, the vast majority were delivered to the United States Navy and the Marine Corps. Export sales accounted for only a small percentage of total production. Three European countries ordered several examples of this highly manoeuvrable multi-role fighter and continue to operate them to this day: Switzerland, Spain and Finland. The Nordic country ordered 64 Hornets to replace its MiG-21 and Saab Draken fighters. In 2023, No. 11 Fighter Squadron unveiled this special livery at the Royal International Air Tattoo for its solo display in the UK, as well as at other air shows that season. The Finnish Hornets are due to be gradually replaced by the new F-35 Lightning over the coming years.
