May 1978 - Kolwezi (formerly Zaire): Thousands of Katanga rebels take control of the town and hold hundreds of European hostages captive. Massacres take place... Faced with this emergency, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing launches Operation Bonite. Without warning, without ground support, without the possibility of reinforcements and with "sparse and inaccurate" information, the soldiers of the 2nd Parachute Regiment of the Foreign Legion (2nd REP) were ordered to parachute over Kolwezi. Colonel Philippe Erulin and his men have only one goal: to rescue the hostages. Thanks to the personal notes of the commander of the 2nd REP, family archives and unpublished documents, this book takes the reader into the heart of the operation and reveals the human and tactical challenges faced by these elite soldiers.
