The painter Robert Warthmüller (1859 -1895) created many historical depictions of Frederick the Great, which enjoyed great popularity during the painter's lifetime. He was therefore also known as the "Fridericus Painter". "From the life and deeds of the great king and his soldiers he borrowed many an important well-known picture." (from the obituary by Prof.L.Pietsch). Among them is the painting "The Youngest Recruit". The pewter figure series was engraved after the core scene of this contemplative, humorous painting, which, in contrast to the martial war paintings of other painters, lets us participate in a rural celebration. The painting was purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm I.
