The series was engraved after a Knötel drawing. During the retreat after Napoleon's defeat in Russia, many French soldiers were taken prisoner. In the scene depicted, they are guarded on a village square by Central Asian auxiliary troops of the Russian army. A charitable civilian couple is trying to bring food to the prisoners. The tree was deliberately not engraved, as a large number of pewter trees already exist. The figures can be added from the series Tilsit 1807 and Marauding Frenchmen 1812.
