Moctezuma II (actually Motecuhzoma, 1465-1520) was ruler of the Aztec Empire from 1502 until his death in 1520. During the first seventeen years of his reign, he continued the rigid expansionist policies of his predecessors; however, he is much better known for his role in the struggle against the Spanish under Hernán Cortés during the last two years of his life.
