Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano (1485 -1547) was a Spanish conquistador. With the help of his Indian allies, he conquered the Aztec Empire and its capital Tenochtitlan. In the years from 1521 to 1530 Hernán Cortés was governor general of New Spain.
