Search for traces and inventory in three centuries The literature dealing with the history of the pewter figure in Germany focuses mainly on the South German officers with the emphasis on Nuremberg/Fürth. At least for the period up to World War 1, with limitations still until 1945, this is certainly true, because the old Berlin manufacturers only achieved the economic importance of their Nuremberg/Fürth competitors for a limited time, although the then Prussian and later Imperial capital and its surroundings must certainly have been a lucrative market for pewter toys. Nevertheless, they almost invariably went out of business by 1918. This is probably why pewter figurine manufacturers from the Berlin area have only been treated very "step-motherly" in the relevant literature so far.
This was reason enough for the author Wolf Rüdiger Bonk to deal with this subject for years, to research sources in archives and thus to compile a comprehensive overview of the history of Berlin pewter figurine publishers: From A for Aepler to Z for Zirner. The often extensive company data is supplemented by the names of the engravers who worked for the companies and the main themes. Numerous b/w illustrations complement the informative chronological information. A 16-page colour section with many illustrations of figures from Berlin collections rounds off this book, with which the author will make a significant contribution to the reappraisal of the history of the pewter figure in Berlin.
