Bogatyr is the name for knights from medieval Russian sagas, who are sung about in various heroic songs (bylinas). In real life, the bogatyri were mostly free mercenaries who gained recognition as bogatyrs thanks to their training and bravery. They were responsible for guarding the borders, training and managing the armed forces of a knjaz' (prince). These soldiers are known through the legends and fairy tales from the time of Kievan Rus before the Mongol conquest. Especially during the time of Kievan Rus and the struggle of Russian principalities with the nomads from Central Asia and Finno-Ugrians from the Western Urals, many legends about the Bogatyri were created. -Wikipedia-
