The uniform worn by the U.S. Army during World War One was fairly modern and the result of practical experience, field trials, and advances in technology. In 1910 a new uniform and equipment was introduced with several characteristics inspired by the European powers of the same period. While most countries still incorporated traditional system of leather straps with buckles for supporting individual items of equipment, the U.S. Army adopted an all canvas set of belts and carriers that primarily attached with a system of hooks and grommets with adjustment made by buckles on the supporting straps. When deployed to Europe various French and British items designed for front lines were considered for American use. The British Brodie steel helmet and small box respirator gas mask were eventually adopted on a massive scale with only minor variations.
