The memoirs of a Volksdeutscher war volunteer published here not only show the thinking of a young man at the time, but also document the events between Romania and Hungary, as well as the recruitment of the Volksdeutschers of the southeast region. The training and the behaviour of the Reich German instructors are described, as well as the deployment first in France, then Denmark and finally again in France as part of the SS Panzer Grenadier Brigade 49.
There he became an Allied prisoner of war and describes, as if in a diary, his various experiences and impressions, including unloading the transport ships in Normandy, which ensured a never-ending supply, while from 1943 onwards there were already more and more bottlenecks on the German side. His experiences as a prisoner of war are no less informative than his active war memoirs for anyone interested in contemporary history.
