The second volume of the three-part series on the Knight's Cross bearers of the SS Division "Wiking" is also intended to introduce the reader to the men and their deeds in a different way than other books on this subject. Pictures can, better than any description, authentically illustrate the joys, sufferings, hardships, successes and defeats of the soldiers. Faces, facial expressions and gestures should speak. The majority of the soldiers presented in this second volume received their Knight's Cross in 1943.
Not only the photos of the soldiers decorated with this high award are shown, but also the misery and horror of war, the daily struggle for survival. The book makes no claim to be complete, nor does it claim to be a scholarly work. It is intended to be an easy-to-read information tool about the Knight's Cross holders of the SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Wiking" in 1943. So that the books are not unwieldy in their scope, only a limited number of Knight's Cross bearers can be described in each volume. The abundance of material would otherwise go beyond the set scope. With its volunteers from many European countries, united in the fight against Bolshevism, the SS division "Wiking" embodied the first European force under German command. The reader should form his or her own picture of the general military situation as well as of the men and their struggle on the basis of the reports and photos.
