Francisco Franco (1892-1975), who saw himself as the leader of Spain by the grace of God, ruled over the fate of his country for almost four decades. Since the beginning of the dictatorship in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the "Caudillo" has been a highly controversial figure: for some, he stands for the destruction of a liberal democratic order, cruel repression and decades of division in society, while others see him as a prudent and intelligent personality who spared Spain the suffering of the Second World War and worked for the good of the people. Some 50 years after the dictator's death, the controversies surrounding his person still heat up the minds of Spanish society.
