This conference volume covers a time frame from antiquity to the present and examines a selection of the important fortress cities in Germany under the aspects of chronology, typology and everyday culture of fortress cities. The approaches are interdisciplinary: archaeological findings of a fortress town, historical, military-historical and realienkundliche research on citizens and the military, up to the cultural-political and urban planning debate of former military buildings provide an insight into past and still existing infrastructures.
They show in an impressive form the continuity of bourgeois social forms up to the present. Volume 46 of the series "Stadt in der Geschichte".
