This book takes a look behind the National Socialist propaganda backdrop and develops a different picture of the Hitler Youth on the basis of order sheets, archive documents and descriptions by contemporary witnesses: violence and vandalism, corruption and theft, sexuality, individualism and stubbornness. Accordingly, it was a precarious, chaotic and often overburdened mass organisation that was not only directed and controlled "from above", but functioned differently on the ground and whose young members sometimes even evaded the control of the state.
