In the 6th and 7th centuries, a fortified landscape emerged in the North African region of Thugga (present-day Tunisia) through the construction of fortresses, fortifications, city walls, and watchtowers. The urban agglomeration of the study area was one of the richest regions in Roman North Africa. Philipp Margreiter shows the roles and possible uses of the various fortifications in the transformation of late antique settlement patterns and the adaptation strategies that resulted. In addition, he examines the construction processes and material resources of the individual fortresses on the basis of spolia in order to understand the selection and decision-making processes during their construction. This volume is the first to show the integration of Byzantine fortifications in a North African region into a landscape archaeological study. This approach can also be applied to other regions of Byzantine North Africa and can serve as a model for future archaeological research projects in the Maghreb region.
