Despite a lack of competence between the army spies and the Kriegsmarine, the German landing spies often achieved astonishing successes. Commando operations against enemy ground troops and surprise strikes against partisans were just as much part of their operational spectrum as securing fjords and islands, supplying their own land forces that had been cut off or ferrying army troop units. Their equipment was adapted to this: light and heavy assault boats, landing craft and amphibious vehicles, ferries and pioneer bridges of various types - transport vehicles and highly mobile weapon carriers. Often pioneering work was done in a double sense: Pioneering concepts were developed here far earlier than in the "classic" Kriegsmarine - for example, improved strategic mobility by dismantling watercraft for overland transport, or rational series production through standardisation and simultaneous construction in many small shipyards, often even inland!Technology, tactics and training often went - hand in hand - completely new ways here. This exciting development is explained in this volume on the basis of 604 original photos from the Second World War - photos the likes of which have never been seen before.
