The building up of the Imperial Japanese Navy began in the 19th century, after the opening of Japan towards the West. During the Pacific War in 1941, it was one of the strongest naval forces in the world, alongside the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy. Following on from the previously published Volume 1, this illustrated book covers the following aspects: The "Congo" replacement ship, an unprecedented éclat; "Nisshin". Seaplane tender, fast minelayer and carrier for small submarines; flak destroyers of the "Akizuki" class; small submarines of classes A to D (Koryu) and their carriers; sub-cruisers of class B (class I 15); naval transporters; transporters of the second class (types 1091 and 103); fast bomb target ships of the "Omaha" class; loss of the destroyers "Ariake" and "Mikazuki".

Numerous historical photos, some of them full-page, with detailed captions (including aerial photos taken by US reconnaissance aircraft) show the ships, their deck superstructures, their armament and crews at the berths as well as on the high seas - including gripping shots from the midst of battle. Numerous drawings (complete views and details) illustrate the construction of individual ships, and technical tables created especially for this volume provide information on construction data, the most important details and the fates of the ships and boats. The text provides information on technical and operational history, conversions and modernisations.
