In 1914, hardly anyone believed in any military utility of aviation, which was still very young. Most military men could only imagine aircraft and airships for reconnaissance and artillery observation, similar to the tethered balloons that had already tentatively entered service. But four years later they found that the new weaponry had revolutionised warfare.
