The book describes the history of naval aviation in the Adriatic region, starting from the Austro-Hungarian Empire up until 1991 and the breakup of Yugoslavia. Authors Danijel Frka and Bojan Dimitrijevic sketch out the intensive and dynamic development of the naval aviation in the Adriatic in a detailed and compelling manner, as the book is equipped with almost 400 photographs - many of them published for the first time - and the color profiles of the aircraft and helicopters mentioned, along with their camouflage and markings. The book highlights all crucial naval aviation breakthroughs of the 20th century, such as long-range reconnaissance planes, torpedo bomber seaplanes and antisubmarine aircraft, as well as the way they were employed in the region. The authors trace the origins and development of the naval aviation in the region from their humble post-WW1 beginnings, their growth in the interwar period to the aerial operations during World War Two. They especially focus on the unknown yet fascinating information on the 1941 April War, the operations of the Yugoslav Seaplane Squadron within the British RAF in Egypt in 1941 and 1943, and the actions of the Partisan seaplane fleet in 1943. At the time, the authors dont fail to mention the post WW2 growth and diversification of the naval aviation in the SFR Yugoslavia. The Naval Aviation in the Adriatic provides an in-depth coverage on a fascinating and fast-changing aspect of aviation and warfare which had tremendous influence in shaping the history of the region.
The work looks at the role of important technical developments in naval aviation in the 20th century, such as the long-range reconnaissance aircraft, the torpedo bomber or aircraft specifically for anti-submarine warfare, and their use in the Adriatic. The authors trace all the important historical and technical developments in naval aviation, from the modest beginnings in the post-war period of the First World War, through the important changes of direction in the interwar period, to the fundamental innovations and major military operations during the Second World War. Among other things, the volume deals with the little-known naval operations in the Adriatic during the short "April War" in 1941, the operations of the Yugoslavian seaplane squadron as part of the British Royal Air Force in Egypt in 1941 and the operations of the seaplane units of the Yugoslavian partisans in 1943. Of course, the developments after 1945 are not forgotten, when naval aviation underwent an increasing split and specialisation over the years and decades. All in all, this book offers a detailed look at a fascinating and rapidly changing area of military aviation and naval aviation that has shaped the history of the entire region.
