A volume from the series "History in Detail". After the Wehrmacht had survived the first winter of war in the East with heavy losses, it lacked the necessary reserves to advance simultaneously on all three front sections, as it had at the beginning of the Russian campaign. In the summer of 1942, it was therefore decided to launch a major offensive on the southern section. The strategic goal: the oil fields of the Caucasus. Gradually, however, a city came into focus that had played no role at all in the original plan of attack, and finally became the epitome of the fight to the death between Germany and the Soviet Union: Stalingrad.
