A few years ago, the legal embargo period expired for the "General Defence Plan" (GDP), i.e. the "sharp" deployment plans for the war in Europe ("V-Fall", "Ernstfall" or other politically correct terms at the time), which was top secret at the time and therefore still kept under lock and key in the military archives (Freiburg) of the Federal Archives until recently. The sections of the GDP published here for the first time, primarily relating to southern Germany, form the basis of this volume. Particular attention is paid to the pioneer troops of the German army, which, together with the NATO allies, would naturally have played a decisive role in the defence of the former Federal Republic and thus our way of life. And why "Petting instead of Pershing"? This was one of the many, sometimes highly moral, sometimes totally bonkers, but generally unclouded by any knowledge of security policy, slogans at demonstrations of the old peace movement of the 1980s. For example, "No new nuclear weapons until the old ones are used up!"
