The Danish Air Force (Flyvevåbnet) is a branch of the Danish Armed Forces (Forsvaret). The latter unites the Army (Hæren), the Air Force (Flyvevåbnet) and the Navy (Søværnet). The national tasks of the Danish Armed Forces primarily include surveillance of Danish airspace and waters to ensure national sovereignty, search and rescue (SAR) operations, maritime environmental tasks and police support measures.
As a comparatively small country, Denmark has a sizeable air force with considerable combat power and a wide variety of types. This booklet looks at the history of the Danish Air Force from its foundation - the first flight of a military aircraft in 1910 - to the delivery of the first Lockheed F-35A Lightning II in March 2021.
