The 1st Panzer Division, as one of the two armoured divisions of the German Army, exercised from 15 January to 5. February 2022, as part of the exercise "Allied Spirit XIII", the 1st Armoured Division led three multinational brigades with a total strength of 6,000 soldiers from Germany, Great Britain, Kosovo, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Hungary and the USA in a high-intensity engagement of national and alliance defence at the "Joint Multinational Readiness Center" (JMRC) in Hohenfels.
In contrast to the "Saber Junction" and "Combined Resolve" exercise series at the JMRC, in which U.S. units are the main troop contributors, supported by allies and partners, the "Allied Spirit" exercise series focuses on an allied major force. For the 1st (DEU) Armoured Division, participation in "Allied Spirit XIII" was an essential milestone on the way to becoming a "War fighting Headquarters", a headquarters for the command and control of multinational brigades in case of crisis and operations.
