During the course of the Third Crusade (1189 to 1192), disputes arose between the participating crusaders, in which the English king Richard the Lionheart also played his part.
After the conquest of Acre on 12 July 1191, Richard the Lionheart and the French king had their flags planted on the city wall as a sign of victory. The Duke of Austria, who had also taken part in the battle, added his flag, even though he was not a king. This was a scandal! Richard's soldiers tore down the flag, whereupon the Duke of Austria felt personally insulted. The French king stayed out of it and made his way home. Richard, however, paid no attention to the angry duke because his mind was already on the conquest of Jerusalem.
When Richard the Lionheart returned to England after the Crusade, disguised as a simple pilgrim and with only a few faithful, he incomprehensibly took the route via Austria and Germany. Here he was discovered by his adversary on 21.12.1192, taken to Dürnstein Castle and held prisoner. It was not until 04.02.1194 that he was freed and could now return to England.
