During the 1st Crusade. Crusade (1096 to 1099), a battle took place not far from the city of Dorylaion (today Eskesehir in Anatolia) between the Crusader army and the army of the Seljuk prince Kilij Arslan (The Sword-Lion). The Seljuks initially succeeded in breaking into the Crusader camp. Rumour had it among the crusaders' women that all attractive women would be taken to a seraglio by the victors, while children, old and unattractive women would be led into slavery. Therefore, many women began to adorn themselves and dress festively, or even to undress and show off their charms in order to escape slavery. Now, however, the fortunes of war turned and the Seljuk army was defeated by the crusaders. The returning knights found their wives in the most seductive outfits and poses. Their indignation was great and it was decided that in future, as a punishment, the women should be banished from the army train and interned in a separate women's camp, as happened, for example, in the later siege of the city of Antioch.
