On 24 November 1858, Emperor Franz Joseph I opened the Wörgl railway station and at the same time the Innsbruck-Wörgl-Kufstein railway line. By the end of the monarchy, an extensive railway network had been built that reached into many valleys. The railway was celebrated as the "gateway to the world".
