This richly illustrated volume in colour throughout not only describes the history of the Order and its various forms, variants and issues, but also shows the historical contexts of individual epochs in the bestowal of the Order. The author also deals with the "afterlife" of the Order, such as the legal authorisation of the Federal Republic of Germany with regard to the wearing of war medals from 1957, in particular the Iron Cross, the change in the perception of tradition in the Bundeswehr as well as the introduction of a military badge of honour of the FRG in 2008. The work is at the same time a companion volume for the exhibition on the Iron Cross taking place in 2013 in the Wehrgeschichtliches Museum Rastatt.
