Duke Guarnieri, lord of the great company, enemy of God, mercy and grace: this was the motto of Werner von Urslingen, known as Duke Guarnieri, who took part in the Battle of Parabiago as commander of the San Giorgio mercenary company. It was a hard-fought battle, fought on a cold, snowy day in the middle of winter 1339 between two cousins of the Visconti family: Lodrisio and Luchino, the former supported by the San Giorgio mercenary company, made up of Germans, the latter at the head of the Milanese forces. Lodrisio wanted to conquer Milan with the support of the Scaligeri, which was a proxy war for Verona, in a historical situation characterised by the unscrupulous politics of the rulers, who were ready for any conspiracy and any change of sides to increase their power.
