Emperor Frederick "Barbarossa's" fifth journey to Italy in 1174 was certainly his most important. The results of the war that led to the Battle of Legnano were momentous for the further history of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Italy. This publication examines the historical events in their entirety.
The commanders and the opposing armies: the communal and imperial armies, their strategies, organisation, recruitment, armament, etc. It is a study of the two most important battles of the campaign, the Battle of Carcano and the far better known Battle of Legnano. The clash was crucial to the long war waged by the Holy Roman Empire to assert its power over the northern Italian city-states. These decided to settle their mutual rivalries and unite in a military alliance symbolically led by Pope Alexander III: the Lombard League. This agreement led to the final triumph of the Lombard League and its citizen-soldiers.
