Even today, more than eighty years after the start of the Spanish civil war, there is still debate as to why Benito Mussolini gave his help to the cause of the nationalists. That is, if it did so purely for political calculation, tending to favor the establishment of another right-wing dictatorship in Spain by ousting the popular front that came to power on February 16, 1936, or to obtain possession of bases in the Balearic Islands , necessary to block in the event of war, communications between North Africa and France, a country to which the fascist government intended to contest the domination of the central-western Mediterranean, and ask for territorial claims.
The author also examines the political and strategic considerations that prompted Benito Mussolini to intervene in the conflict on the side of the Spanish nationalists.
