While âclimbing a fence. Friedrich der Große raised the Corps Jäger zu Fuß on 15 June 1744, recruited from the local forestry staff and their sons. The unit, which started out 144 strong and brought its own armament (the rifled hunting rifles were clearly inferior to the smoothbore muskets of the line infantry in terms of accuracy), grew to 300 men by the Seven Years' War and was divided into two companies in 1757.
