In March 1945, a few days before the end of the Second World War, soldiers of the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht murdered 208 Soviet and Polish forced labourers in the Sauerland region, including children and a baby. Over three nights, the unit under SS-Obergruppenführer Hans Kammler committed the most serious crime of the final phase of the war in the German Reich outside prisons, concentration camps and death marches. Marcus Weidner not only reconstructs the three-day massacre, but also examines the initial Allied investigations, the legal punishment by German authorities in the 1950s, and the difficult process of coming to terms with the crimes, their relics, and the graves of the victims in the region.
