Social rank, profession, gender and age can be read from clothing just as much as ethnic affiliation or the influence of peoples on the fringes of the Roman Empire. But clothing also demonstrates the change in fashions, the correlation between tradition and innovation as well as local and political localisations. The multifaceted nature of the volume is due to an international team of authors who approach the subject in a multidisciplinary way and make the archaeological evidence and images as well as the source texts speak for themselves.
