Volume 1 of the series "German Fortresses". In Bavaria a unique variety of fortresses has been preserved, whose architecture has connections to Italy, the Netherlands and France, among others. The military buildings are outstanding monuments of technical progress, reflecting the respective eras from the Renaissance to Classicism.
This richly illustrated volume presents more than 20 buildings and categorises them in their historical context. The large number of 16th to 19th century fortresses preserved in Bavaria today is the result of the many once independent territories in Bavaria, Franconia and Swabia. Their rulers, dukes and electors, prince-bishops, princes and imperial cities sought to secure their lands using the most modern methods. Artillery fortifications were therefore built instead of the outdated castles and city walls. Due to the constant development of military technology, these structures had to be modernised time and again - or used for other purposes. Richly illustrated overview of the diversity of fortress architecture in Bavaria Presentation of the most significant and important fortifications.
