Thuringia is rich in castles of all kinds from early medieval archaeological sites and imposing ruins to magnificently expanded palaces. These structures bear witness to power and representation, but also to cultural change and technical development. Dynasties such as the Landgraves of Thuringia, the Wettins and the Reuss family have had a decisive influence on the cultural landscape. This volume highlights the historical significance of castles for rule, court culture and land development, and shows how their functions have changed over the centuries. In addition to architecture, the focus is also on 19th-century castle romanticism and modern monument preservation. Special attention is given to Wilhelmsthal Palace and other properties belonging to the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation. The myth of the castle continues to this day as cultural heritage and a place of longing.
