Knowledge about fortresses could be acquired in various ways: through treatises, later also through articles in specialist journals, through oral acquisition of knowledge, through illustrations and plans and through visits. However, these sources were public and published sources that certainly did not reflect the complete and exact facts. Fortresses had a high symbolic value, especially in the early modern period, and they also served as a deterrent to potential enemies, which is why they were definitely shown off. However, details (at least) had to remain hidden in order not to weaken themselves. This is where covert information gathering, or espionage, comes in. The contributions go back to the annual conference of the German Society for Fortress Research 2021 in the historic fortress town of Wesel.
