The series "The Apollo Photo Archive" comprises the most comprehensive visual documentation of the American lunar landing program ever published. This fourth volume is dedicated to Apollo 9a risky yet crucial step in the Space Race against the Soviet Union. Commander Jim McDivitt and Command Module Pilot Dave Scottboth Gemini veterans and Air Force pilotswere joined by civilian rookie Rusty Schweickart as Lunar Module Pilot. During their ten-day orbit of the Earth, they successfully executed the first rendezvous and docking maneuver involving the Lunar Module. Schweickart performed the first spacewalk of the Apollo program, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the spacesuit and life-support system for use on the lunar surface. The twelve-volume "Apollo Photo Archive" presents imagery documenting the assembly of the spacecraft and rockets, the backgrounds and training of the crews, the countdown, launch, mission trajectory, and splashdown, as well as the astronauts' subsequent public appearances and activities. This volume contains more than 800 images, many of whichparticularly those from the pre- and post-mission periodshave never before been published.
