The Apollo Photo Archive series comprises the most comprehensive pictorial documentation of the American lunar landing programme ever published. The series continues with the launch of Apollo 8 in December 1968. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders achieved several historic firsts on this flight. Apollo 8 was the first manned flight to overcome Earth's gravity and the first to orbit another celestial body (the Moon). Launched by the Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 8 crew reached a speed of 24,593 mph, setting both a speed and distance record from Earth. The Apollo Photo Archive contains images of the assembly of the spacecraft and rocket, the selection and training of the crew, pre-flight activities, the countdown, launch, flight itself, splashdown, and subsequent appearances by the crew, as well as related activities.
