The American 3rd Air Division flew its bombing missions from May 1943 onwards under the command of the 8th US Air Fleet. In August 1943 and in the summer of 1944, it also took part in so-called "shuttle missions", in which the unit took off from England, unloaded its bombs over the corresponding target and then flew on to North Africa or Russia. Refuelled and reloaded there, they flew to a new target and then back to their home airfield in England. Although the 3rd Air Division was the last of the bomber fleet to join the "Mighty Eighth", its operational history was no less impressive than that of the other units.
