Fortificatory excursion report of a study trip from 01 to 11 October 2016. A volume from the series "Contributions to International Fortification Research". The excursion report documents a search for traces of known and unknown fortifications in the triangle of Edirne, Gallipoli and Istanbul. Of particular interest are the conservation efforts for the fortifications in Edirne, the legacies of the World War on both sides of the Dardanelles and the Theodosian Land Wall in Istanbul.
A visit to Thrace, which today encompasses European Turkey, leads to all kinds of historical fortifications. Situated on the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, this cultural area has always been the focus of strategic desires since ancient times. Maritime access to the Black Sea and thus to southern Russia was always dependent on free access through the Dardanelles and the Bosporus.
