This monograph describes the technical development of Soviet aviation in the period from 1920 to 1990. The basis of the observations is the dual character of technical development, which is determined both by the requirements and possibilities of society and by physical limits. A distinction is made between the development and production of aircraft by the aviation industry, the use of aircraft in fleets, military aviation in the service of national defence and civil aviation in the service of the national economy.
Finally, it is taken into account that aircraft are composed of the two subsystems airframe and engine, each of which is regarded as an independent technical system in development and production.
