Descriptionof FliegerRevue kompakt. Band 13: Sowjetische Jagdflugzeuge im Zweiten Weltkrieg

The German attack on the USSR was a disaster for the Soviet air force. Even though the Soviet Union had drawn the right conclusions from its participation in the civil war in Spain and its wars in Poland and Finland and had begun an extensive modernisation programme, the air forces were for the most part equipped with outdated inferior technology. This was also due to the fact that the aviation industry had started from scratch in 1920 and, because of the overall low technical level and poor quality, could neither quantitatively nor qualitatively fulfil the wishes and demands of the armed forces.
In addition, the terror in the years of Stalin's purges set the positive development that had begun far back.
With huge efforts, apart from American help in the Lend-Lease Agreement, it was possible to develop an efficient aircraft industry and to produce modern fighter aircraft in sufficient numbers. Thus, from 1943 onwards, the air forces won air supremacy and the Soviet Union achieved a turning point in the war.
