Catilina has gone down in history - but not as the ruler of Rome he wanted to become. His attempted coup failed in 63 BC after Cicero had uncovered the plans to overthrow him. Sallust's monograph on the "Catilinaric Conspiracy" and the turmoil of that year is an indispensable part of Latin teaching.
