On 14 October 1962, an American U-2 reconnaissance plane flies over the Caribbean island of Cuba at high altitude. Analysis of the images taken during this flight reveals the construction of launching sites for Soviet medium-range nuclear missiles. The US government under President John F. Kennedy is looking for ways to effectively counter a nuclear threat right on its own doorstep. During the following 13 days, the Soviet Union, the USA and the world balance on the brink of a destructive nuclear war.
