Description
In 1999, NATO decided to intervene in the conflict between the paramilitary KLA, which was fighting for the independence of Kosovo, and the Serbian-Yugoslav army. In doing so, it wanted to force the Slobodan Milosevic government to withdraw the army from Kosovo. Germany also took part in the NATO air strikes against Serbia, and its Red-Green government pushed through this military measure with the reference to Serbian human rights violations.
A difficult decision - after all, not only the future of the crisis-ridden Balkan region was at stake, but also the self-image of the Bundeswehr and thus of the Federal Republic. Hans-Peter Kriemann looks back on the events of 1999 and also explains the political and diplomatic background to the combat mission. A volume from the series "Wars of the Modern Age" published by the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr.
